Senior Living at Friendship Village of Tempe Arizona

(posted 7/23/12) We got an address change from a classmate we haven't heard from in a while - Larry Lathom. He had been living in Chandler, AZ when his wife Carol died five years ago, so last spring he decided to move to nearby Friendship Village of Tempe, a life care facility. He has a townhouse now but there are other living options available should he become less able to cope in the future. According to Larry "There is endless activity from exercise programs to 'happy hours' to entertainment here and a lot of very interesting people. We often say it is like living on a cruise ship."

Larry loves the greater Phoenix area where he says there is a lot going on. He explains that it is the 5th largest US city without the traffic problems of the other big cities. He copes with the summer heat by traveling during the summer months to visit his son in Seattle while vacationing along the way in Newport Beach, CA and Coos Bay, Oregon where they plan to do some hiking, beach-combing, and jet boating. In September he plans to spend a few days in NYC on his way to Greece for a catamaran trip thru the Greek Isles and by the time he comes back home he expects the temperatures in Tempe to be out of the 100's!

Class of 59 Couple Celebrate their 50th

(posted 7/17/12) Who would have known that a few years after graduation two classmates would tie the knot and build a marriage that has lasted for fifty years and still growing. Gerald Arlen Johnson and Judy Ann (Jonason) Johnson both from West high Class of 59 were married March 31, 1962. As Jerry said in his 40th reunion autobiography: "People who we later met were surprised to learn that we had known each other since eighth grade but did not date until college. We got married after my sophomore year. The best decision I ever made!"

The celebration has been postponed until the middle of July so the grand kids would be out of school and others could attend from far and wide - places like Elkhorn, WI, Frederick, MD, Everett, WA, and Toronto, Canada all converging on Millidgeville, GA where the couple now live. They were kind enough to share with us some of their thoughts in words they plan to share at the celebration. Join us in wishing a very happy anniversary to a "classy" class couple!

William Cagnoni Surfaces in Lake Havasu

(posted 7/15/12) After several years on the missing list, William T. Cagnoni "CAG" found our website and emailed us with his whereabouts. It seems he and his wife Barbara have been busy living life down in Lake Havasu City, AZ. They spend the winter there (October thru May) and then travel the rest of the year keeping up with their son Russ and two grandsons who live in Denver. The boys visit the Midwest frequently as touring AAA Hockey players. One plays for Omaha and the other a team from Denver. You know that "CAG" enjoys fishing when you learn that the last four digits of his phone number can be dialed as FISH! The photo shows him fishing in the nearby Lake Havasu near his home. "CAG" and his wife Barbara will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in December 2012. Congratulations! They hope to visit the Midwest sometime in 2013.

Pete and Paula Zammuto Celebrate their 50th

(posted 7/3/12) It must have been the green and white 57 Buick Convertible that Paula was driving that first caught the attention of Pete Zammuto back in 1958 when they first met. It seems that a common friend that Pete worked with at Rockford Dry Goods arranged the meeting with the former Paula Jerdin of the West High Class of 58. Pete was given the chance to drive the Buick and he enjoyed it so much he called Paula afterward which led to their first dinner date at Howard Johnsons in Loves Park.

Pete and Paula continued to see each other over the next few years and the relationship led to a wedding in Saint Anthony of Padua church May 5, 1962. It was a big affair with over 500 at the reception at the Lithuanian Club with entertainment provided by the Mike Alongi band. Mike Sassali from the class of 59 was a groomsman. The honeymoon was in Vero Beach, Florida.

Now we fast-forward to the present fifty years later and we see a remarkable couple who have learned to work together through life's ups and downs, keeping the spark of love alive. They have thrived in the city where they were born and developed a close family with son Vince and daughter Andrea and six grandchildren plus a large network of relatives and friends to carry them along to their next milestone in life. We wish you both a very happy anniversary!!
